Owner Jason Penland is a very kind individual. When I met with his office mananger, Stanley Combs, Mr. Combs didn't like me at first glance. It was Jason who pushed my job interview through and after a couple months I noticed a few things from a couple funeral directors I wanted to speak to Stanley about. I wasn't given a chance. Instead, Stanley put words in my mouth by stating "I don't think your happy here, and you don't like my staff." He would not let me in the building, shoved me out the door with my final check and stated if I returned he would call law enforcement. I was not aggressive, I didn't get a word in edge wise, and I have been unsuccessful at reaching Mr. Penland. I do not wish this company any ill will, but I strongly urge that Mr. Penland find a replacement for Mr. Combs. I went above and beyond with Mr. Combs to show him how much I loved my job, and loved working with my fellow coworkers. Bottom line, Stanley waited for his chance to let me go, and as soon as I wanted to speak to him about a couple of botched services, he didn't allow me and instead terminated my employment. I urge everyone to stay clear of Mr. Combs who also owes me for hours worked and a $150 textbook.
***A word to the wise, and for anyone who is seeking employment with AMS, AAA, or Penlands Funeral home, it has been through my conversations with other funeral homes that I have learned that Mr. Penland and Stanley Combs among other names whom have a very tight knit circle, and if any employee has a complaint, they terminate immediately. So, if you have any cause for concern, leave it alone, keep it to yourself, otherwise you will be let go. Asheville Mortuary Service, Asheville Area Alternative, and Penland Funeral Service's are revolving doors. Reflecting back, it is accurate considering all of my fellow coworkers were very new.
Moving forward seven years. I am now a licensed funeral director and embalmer. My grief put me on a new career path. I now work at Asheville Mortuary Services. It came full circle for me. I am very proud to be a part of the group that cared for my family when I needed it.
A wonderful, caring, professional and compassionate bunch of people!!! Someone is always available to answer questions and take care of anything related. I used Asheville Mortuary for the cremation of my brother and both of my parents. I highly recommend them!
I have no response to the post written by a disgruntled employee. I wasn't there. But I am now. I will tell you that if you are in need of care for a loved one that has passed, we are here for you. You will know the difference between caring and a sales pitch. You won't just hear the difference, you will feel it. I did back in 2010....and I am forever thankful.
In 2010 Asheville Mortuary Services handled the services for my dad. I felt at peace with the care and compassion that was shown to not only my dad, but to my family. We were hurting. They responded with genuine compassion.
Good people! Very helpful and caring.
