Camped on site 50 for a week. The entire area is beautiful. Plenty of walking trails and biking trails. Campground Hosts were so incredibly nice. They came and introduced themselves right when we got there. Clean bathrooms and showers. Very friendly service, would definitely recommend this place!
We absolutely loved it!!
Before I came, I read some bad reviews and I have no idea why there would be bad reviews. For the price of 22$ a night, with swimming, fishing, and even getting to see bears UP CLOSE, it's so worth it. I enjoyed every second, they are so friendly! The only thing I could possibly complain about is the lake water was cold! Bathrooms were super clean and warm showers! Clean beach! Different types and styles of campsites. Fire rings and picnic tables. Beautiful trails. And some good fishing spots!! Definetly making this a new tradition!!!
My wife and I stayed 4 nights at Lake Powhatan, our 1st time there. The campground is clean, well-maintained and the sites are large and well shaded. We actually rented a RV trailer from some folks in Asheville. They brought it to our site which had full hook-ups and set it up. We are empty-nesters who wanted to see how it would work for us to go camping again (we had previously tent-camped many times).
Would definitely recommend this campground to others!
The staff seemed stressed-out and under pressure to watch campers closely. You even have to wait for them to move a cone out of the way every time you leave the campground. They came by on golf carts every 10-15 minutes for the 5 days we were there -- that's a LOT of rounds. There is a checkpoint on the way in (which I totally get); we stopped there after a day trip and waited patiently for someone to give us permission to proceed. Finally, one of the staffers walked over and asked what we wanted. We said "we're going to our campsite". He said "what's stopping you?" We said, the giant stop sign with the extra sign attached to it that says "don't go any further"! The upside of all this obsessive behavior is very clean restrooms and campsites -- they are literally raking the campsite less than 10 seconds after the occupant pulls away. Their stress level and sensitivity does take away from a peaceful and beautiful place, though.
If I could rate 100 stars I would!
One star is too many! They are ABSOLUTELY ridiculous with the rules. Nice location, but the staff starts making there rounds on carts about 9pm pestering us about everything from fire wood, too many people on one site "after hours". If you don't plan on going to bed at ten o'clock or earlier this isn't the place for you. And once they've stopped by because of "noise complaints" they will continue harassing you with everything else they can find. We had the whole circle of Big John loop to our group and they stopped at everyone's site because noise... we were talking at a low level with an occasional laugh here and there. The staff was rude as soon as they got our money in their pocket. Will not be back... be aware they are sticklers.
And thank you to all that work to keep this campground so nice!
This was the best vacation I have ever been on!
