Cool interiors in a huge space that was once a roller skating rink. I had the chicken which was fairly tasty and husband had St. Louis style ribs that were also good. Sides were delicious as well as the array of sauces. Don’t think it was the beta bbq I’ve had but all in all good food and really friendly staff.
We found Buxton during our trip to Asheville. The restaurant is in a converted skating rink and generally had a good vibe. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks, an appetizer to share and two entrees. After 30 min of waiting, none of our food arrived. The bartender had forgotten to put our order in. When it finally did come, the bartender completely forgot our appetizer. The food was delicious but the portions were not generous (and this is coming from someone who is used to San Francisco sized plates). I wanted to love this place but the overall experience was patchy.
Had the mac n cheese and pulled pork. The Mac n cheese was amazing - highly recommend. Had a tomato jam in it that made it extra special. Pulled pork a bit over pulled but still good overall. Good food. Also had great service - our waiter Austin was awesome, friendly and checked in just the right amount.
A very creative and inventive take on traditional barbecue. The chopped pork was excellent. Very lean and full of smoky flavor. I didn't care for their cornbread because it has sugar in it. However, the hush puppies were lovely. And the sauce that accompany them was somewhat spicy and tangy and complimented their flavors. The green beans which are cooked under the pig had an unusual tang to them. Their bread and butter pickles where is good as my mother's and grandmother's. We were so full we didn't save room for dessert. But the array of pies and cakes made our eyes bug out. Next time.
A great sampling of different regional sauces at the sauce bar. The pork we had was cooked in an Eastern NC vinegar pepper sauce. Very good! The white sauce was amazing on the pulled pork. I enjoyed adding extra vinegar sauce to my pulled pork. The Lexington style sweet tomato BBQ was decently smokey and peppery with good flavor.
